AO Smith Heat Pump Water Heaters use advanced vapor compression technology, similar to a household refrigerator but in reverse, to efficiently heat water. The main components are the compressor, expansion valve, and two heat exchangers – evaporator and condenser.
Heat Absorption – The refrigerant inside the evaporator is colder than the surrounding air, allowing it to absorb heat from the outside environment and evaporate into vapor.
Compression – The vapor passes through the compressor, where it is pressurized and its temperature rises significantly.
Heat Transfer – The hot vapor enters the condenser, releasing heat to the water stored in the tank as it condenses back into liquid form.
Cycle Reset – The refrigerant flows through the expansion valve, reducing its pressure and temperature before returning to the evaporator to repeat the cycle.
